BANGOR and HALLANDALE, Fla. - Mildred Striar Kominsky passed away June 5, 2006, surrounded by her family, at home, after a brief illness. She was born June 28, 1918, in Bangor, the daughter of James and Sarah Striar. Mildred attended Bangor schools and Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City, where she worked as a fashion designer. In 1940, she married Dr. Howard L. Kominsky by who she was predeceased in 1980. Mildred was very active in the Bangor community serving as trustee of the Eastern Maine Medical Center for many years, Youth Aliyah chairperson for Hadassah, the Jewish Community Center Theatre Guild, Beth Abraham Synagogue Sisterhood, and was an avid golfer who won the club championship at Pinewood Country Club. She was a patron of the arts at the University of Maine and she found art in everything she did and would make artistic pieces out of common objects. She enjoyed writing poetry for special occasions for family and friends. She is survived by son, Norman (Susan) Kominsky; daughter, Barbara (Sherman) Burry; grandchildren, Julie Reva Kominsky and Dr. Andrew Kominsky, Melissa (David) Esses, Michelle (Steve) Harwood; and great-grandchildren, Madison, Kerrigan, Quincie Esses and Spencer Harwood; and sister, Sylvia Menaker. She was predeceased by brothers, Louis, Bernard and Max. A funeral service will be held noon Tuesday, June 6, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, Center Street, Bangor.
