Note: In the early 1920s Abraham Plavin, a Russian-Jewish immigrant who owned a dry goods shop in Island Falls, was travelling the train from Bangor to Portland to buy a clothing store. During a conversation in a card game on the train, he learned that a furniture store in Lewiston was for sale. He knew nothing about the furniture business but got off anyway in Lewiston to investigate and ended up purchasing the store and renaming it New England Furniture.
