In 1917, Alexander and John Harrisburg, brothers from Lewiston, were drafted to serve in WWI. John had served in the Marines for one year and three months when he was killed in action in France at age 19. His parents were told of his death by reading of it in the paper. At least 11 Jewish Mainers died in service during WW1. Most of them were so young when they were killed that they did not have careers, civic involvements, or synagogue or social club memberships.
